How to show up when someone searches "emergency plumber near me"

A plain checklist for your Google profile, hours and service pages, so urgent searches can find your plumbing company at 2 a.m.

By New Reward 6 min read

A pipe bursts at 2 a.m. The homeowner grabs a phone and searches. Google decides which plumbers show up first.

Google says local results depend on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the person searching) and prominence (how well known your business is). Google also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

You can’t move your shop closer to every caller. You can make your profile match what an urgent caller needs. Here is how.

1. Tell the truth about your hours

Your Google Business Profile should show the hours you actually answer customers. Google asks for your regular customer-facing hours, and you can add special hours for holidays.

  • If you take night calls, show it on your profile, your site and every listing.
  • If you don’t, say what happens after hours. “We call back by 7 a.m.” beats silence.
  • Before a holiday, add special hours so nobody sees a wrong “Open” or “Closed.”

A homeowner standing in an inch of water reads one line: open or closed. Make that line right.

2. Pick a specific category, then list your services

Google says to choose the category that best describes your business, and to pick a specific one. It also says not to add a category for every product or service.

So set your main category to plumbing, then use the services list for the jobs. Add the ones people search for in a hurry:

  • Burst pipe repair
  • Water heater repair
  • Drain and sewer backups
  • Leak detection

3. Set your service area the way Google asks

Most plumbers drive to the customer. Google calls that a service-area business. Its rules say:

  • Hide your street address if customers don’t come to you.
  • Keep the service area within about two hours of driving from where you are based.

List the towns and neighborhoods you really cover. A service area that is too wide sends you calls you can’t take.

4. Build one emergency page on your website

Your profile links to your site. Give urgent visitors a page made for them. Put these on it, in this order:

  1. What counts as an emergency for you: burst pipes, no water, sewage backup, a leaking water heater.
  2. When you answer and how fast someone calls back.
  3. The towns you cover, written out by name.
  4. What to do while they wait, like finding the main water shutoff.
  5. One big phone button at the top of the page.

Keep it short. People read this page while water is running.

5. Put your proof where people look

In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 U.S. consumers, 97% said they read reviews for local businesses. 74% said they look for reviews from the last three months.

  • Ask every customer for a review after the job. Make it a habit, every time.
  • Reply to reviews. Google says a reply shows you value feedback.
  • Show your license number and real job photos on your emergency page.

If one of your techs holds a credential the Department of Energy recognizes as “Energy Skilled,” your profile may show a “U.S. Dept. of Energy Recognized” label. The DOE named plumbing as one of the trades that can qualify.

Your 15-minute checklist

  • Profile hours match the hours you answer
  • Special hours set for the next holiday
  • Main category set to plumbing; urgent jobs listed as services
  • Address hidden if customers don’t visit you
  • Service area lists the towns you really cover
  • Emergency page live, with a phone button at the top
  • A review request goes out after every job

These are the same things New Reward looks at first: whether your emergency service is clear, whether your jobs and towns are easy to match, and whether your proof is easy to find.
